The recipients in each Category (one adult and one next gen) will receive:

- Outstanding Environmentalist Award certificate and Commemorative Native Art piece

- Complimentary registration and travel to receive the award at the 2024 Region 10 Tribal Environmental Leaders Summit

- Recognition on the RTOC and TELS websites and EPA newsletters, and social media

Instructions

Choose one Award Category, then choose one or more optional focus areas shown below. Submit all contact information and the essay by the due date (May 15, 2022). ONE AWARD WILL BE GIVEN PER CATEGORY (One for Adult, One for Youth, regardless of focus area)
Award Category
Category 1: Tribal Leaders/Adults currently contributing or have previously dedicated an impressive amount of time and effort, (can be waged or unpaid) in the Tribal Environmental field.
Award Category
Category 2: Tribal Youth/Young Adults currently attending Elementary, Jr. High, High School or College, or if not in College, up to age 25.

Best Available or Innovative Technology

Provides evidence that environmental challenges are addressed by individuals, groups, commercial entities, Tribes, non-profit organizations and/or governmental entities using creative and effective adaptations of existing, new, or emerging technologies or methodologies. Environmental Management, Stewardship, Conservation, and/or Protection.

Environmental Management, Stewardship, Conservation, and/or Protection

Provides evidence of systematic reviews of processes and systems that identify opportunities for innovations, interventions, and/or modifications that are then shown to effectively decrease outputs of pollution or emissions, reduce use of hazardous chemicals, recycle wastes or outputs, use recycled materials, and/or improve efficiencies that enhance the environment. And/or provides evidence of proactive accomplishment of responsible and sustainable systems or actions to preserve, conserve, or manage the natural environment, ecology, or resources to ensure the long-term integration and application of environmental values. And/ or provides evidence of an action or program that conserves, preserves, repairs, or prevents deterioration of natural resources or ecosystems in a long-term sustainable manner, improving quality of life and the environment.

Public Involvement and Education

Provides evidence that entities who are interested in and/or potentially affected by a decision are given the opportunity for engagement in ways that are innovative, creative, and effective each of the demographics and communities, and that show that their voices are heard, and the outcome is influenced affirmatively by their involvement. (This may include advocating for Tribes to be active in public commenting and Tribal Consultation, etc.) And/ or provides evidence of innovative, creative, and effective educational materials, methods, and/or opportunities for individual or group learning that meets specific educational objectives related to increasing understanding of the environment and/or changing ways that we live to improve environmental stewardship.

Next Generation Award

Next Generation Award Serves as a role model for other young professionals. Demonstrates a noteworthy professional and personal achievement in providing opportunities for Tribal youth for learning and engagement in the Environmental field, and/or in guidance leading to inspire higher education in the Tribal Environmental arena. Exhibits expertise, passion and the ability to inspire others. And/or has demonstrated exceptional leadership in Tribal environmental youth activism and works to develop or fight for building Tribal sovereignty and for the capacity of Tribes to manage their environmental programs.
